Minam, in northeast Oregon, Wallowa County, is one of the last pristine wilderness areas in North America and know for its spectacular, dazzling, and breathtaking views of majestic mountains, glacially formed lakes, and a virtual plethora of wildlife.
The Snake River, the quintessential Western river explored by the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition, originates near the Continental Divide in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, flows through the resort town of Jackson Hole, then west across Southern Idaho. The Snake then proceeds North through Hell’s Canyon, which at a depth of nearly 8000’ is the deepest gorge in North America. Hell’s Canyon forms the border between Idaho and Oregon. Wallowa County is the region of Oregon on the western side of the gorge. Upon exiting Hell’s Canyon, the Snake River meanders north to its confluence with the Columbia River, over 1000 miles from its point of origin. The Snake is the main tributary of the mighty Columbia River, which forms the border between Oregon and Washington. The Wallowa Mountain Range of Wallowa County is the only granite mountain range in Oregon. The 260K acre Eagle Cap Wilderness area is located within the Wallowa Mountains. Two Wild and Scenic Waterways, the Minam River and the Wallowa River have their origin in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. The Minam and the Wallowa Rivers meet at Minam, Oregon. Ten miles downstream from Minam, the Wallowa River meets the Grande Ronde River at Rondowa. The Grande Ronde River, which originates in the Blue and Elkhorn Mountains of Northeastern Oregon is the largest of the Snake’s tributaries within Oregon. All three rivers have excellent fishing. The Wallowa River at Minam is the put in for rafting, tubing, and kayaking both the Wallowa River and the Grande Ronde River. There is abundant deer, elk, and game birds in the surrounding country.
The Grande Ronde River empties into the Snake River near Heller Bar, north of the vast Hell’s Canyon Scenic Area. The Minam Motel and Market is located on the Hell’s Canyon Scenic Byway and is also a station on the Wallowa Union Railroads, Eagle Cap Excursion ride down the Wild and Scenic Wallowa Waterway. The Minam Motel and Market offers individual and group accommodations and services in an eight-unit vintage structure located right on the banks of the Wallowa River.
