The Hells Canyon Mule Days is always held the weekend after Labor Day.

In the Spring of 1981, local ranchers and packers met with representatives of the Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce and USDA Forest Service to explore the idea of putting together a new county event.

As a result, the mule - tough, intelligent, individualistic, often maligned, but the mainstay of the many packers and outfitters working in Wallowa County - was elevated to center stage for the first annual Hells Canyon Mule Days celebration on September 19 - 20, 1981.

Hells Canyon was an appropriate title because that area owes most of its early settlement and development to the mule which predominantly served as a major means of transportation to gain access to this rugged region of the county.

Given the well-known independence of Mule Days’ long-eared star, the entertaining, action-packed event has met its initial goal - both mule skinners and spectators a like can be part of this family oriented mule show, with events and games for all ages.

This years Mule Show events include classes for every age group and skill level. It is a fun family weekend and youngsters enjoy competing and showing their mulemanship abilities as much as the older well honed contestants. The gates opens at noon on Friday with a line up of fun events in the outdoor arena starting at one o'clock and followed by open team roping. Highlights of the weekend events include the Third Annual ClassicJump Off Challenge, which is always a crowd pleaser, and the fast action events including pole bending, barrel racing, mule and donkey races and the fast ass express. Other events not to be missed during the three day show are the packers scramble, wild cow milking, flapjack race, drive and ride, and mystery races. The Trail and Packing classes are sponsored by the Madelyn Bell Memorial Fund. Hells Canyon Mule Days has joined with Oregon Championship Series which is an awards program to promote mule and donkey shows in Oregon. To find out more, view the OCS website at www.oregonchampionshipseries.com.

Professional Rodeo Announcer Lee Daggett will keep the show moving at a steady pace and the audience informed and entertained. It just wouldn't be mule days without him! Daggett is becoming well known in the mule show announcer's arena, and last year he entertained the crowds at Montana Mule Days held in Drummond Montana, Star Mule Show in Star Idaho and he will be announcing the 2005 Oregon Mr. Longears Mule and Donkey Show in Roseburg, Oregon.
The weekend is packed full of mule related happenings and there is always something to see and do for the whole family. Visitors can enjoy strolling The Green and visiting with vendors, exhibitors and western artists. Tennessee Mule Artist Bonnie Shields from Sandpoint, Idaho, is contributing her artistic talents by designing this years 25th annual Hells Canyon Mule Days belt buckle and also designing a new Hells Canyon Mule Dayslogo. Shields is a longstanding member of the Cowboy Cartoonists Association, her "mule art" can be viewed at the show, as well as on her website at www.bonnieshields.com.
